History

In December 2011, Nerdy Girls was founded by Lacey Newman in Oklahoma City. It quickly became a diverse collective of women coming together to create personal, social and creative enrichment. The flagship chapter initiated various sub-groups including a code club for female programmers, a monthly book discussion, and artist/maker groups. Nerdy Girls OKC has hosted various workshops and expanded their outreach in the greater Oklahoma City area by attending community events throughout the year.

2013 was a year of growth for Nerdy Girls. In January, a new chapter was started in Tulsa by former OKC Nerdy Girls member, Lindsey Ison. Tulsa Nerdy Girls continued with the concept of sub-groups, as they have offered opportunities such as book club, crafting/stitching nights, and for those who love dining out, “Gastronomy” club. Later in 2013, Nerdy Girls incorporated and formed an executive board including Lacey, Kendall Werts, and Shay Beezley. By the summertime, Nerdy Girls expanded yet again to a new chapter in Nashville under the lead of Kelly Stephens.

In 2014, Ofelia Ochoa, Kendall Werts, and Shay Beezley formed the Nerdy Girls Association, the organization to unify all existing Nerdy Girls groups and create the foundation for future Nerdy Girls chapters.
